The floor in a treatment room
A physiotherapy practice is not an ordinary workspace. People walk, roll, lie down and exercise; there are treatment tables and equipment that get moved; cleaning happens daily. And at the same time the space has to look calm and well kept, because people come there to recover.
That places three demands on the floor that do not always go together: it must be hygienic , able to withstand intensive use, and visually restrained.
Why seamless is the starting point here
In a care environment, joints are the most awkward part of a floor. They are more porous than the surrounding material, they collect dirt and they are harder to clean thoroughly than a flat surface. With a seamless resin floor that problem does not exist: there is one continuous surface that can be cleaned in a single movement.
In this practice the floor also runs right up to the walls. The floor-to-wall connection — traditionally a place where dirt accumulates — thus becomes a flat, cleanable whole as well.
The system used
For this space PSL 3650 was chosen, finished with our UV-resistant WPT 5000 CM top coat.
PSL 3650 is a polyurethane resin floor based on aromatic polyurethane, developed for homes and commercial spaces with high design requirements. The properties that count in a practice environment:
- Seamless, with no joints in which dirt can settle
- Robust and solid, resistant to intensive use and to equipment being moved
- Available in all RAL and NCS colours, in matt or satin
- UV-resistant thanks to the WPT 5000 CM top coat, so colourfast where daylight falls
That last property is often underestimated. A practice room with large windows receives direct daylight on the same spots for years. Without a UV-resistant finish, colour differences will appear over time between the lit and the shaded zones.
Colour as a point of calm
The floor here was carried out in a light, neutral shade. That is a deliberate choice: in a space where people are treated, the floor does not have to ask for attention. The furniture, the daylight and the equipment set the scene; the floor keeps the space light and open.
Because PSL 3650 is available in the full RAL and NCS range, that neutral shade does not have to be a standard colour. The floor can be matched exactly to the interior concept — or to the house style of the practice, which often plays a part in a commercial care environment.
The gloss level is a choice too. Matt looks softer and hides light reflections better; satin is slightly easier to clean and gives more depth to the colour. For treatment rooms, matt or light satin is often chosen, depending on the incidence of light.
Matched systems
We develop and produce primers, scraping coats, resin flooring compounds and top coats ourselves, in Belgium. That means the entire build-up is matched: every layer is developed with the next one in mind.
For a practice room that matters, because the build-up depends on the substrate, the expected load and the cleaning products that will be used. Instead of a standard package, we determine together with the applicator which build-up fits.
